Meet The FramerHi, I'm Alan Kerr, founder and specialist framer at Old Shop Framing in Kington, Herefordshire.
As a boy, growing up in Scotland, I loved nature and the outdoors, spending summers building dens and getting my hands dirty.
As I got older this love of making things allowed me to turn my hand to carpentry and woodworking projects, like making a chair for my daughter or building a sauna in my garden. More recently, I have been exploring my creative side producing my artwork, by controlling the explosive energy of firework as a way of mark making on traditionally handmade cotton rag paper with beautiful deckled edges, then adding natural pigments forged from the banks of the River Wye or the hedgerows and apple orchards of rural Herefordshire. The image is then embellished with 24ct gold leaf in contrast to ultra black paint to create highs and lows. These are highly textured works. Ask to view my pieces next time you visit the shop.
Today, I channel my love of quality natural materials and craftsmanship into making beautiful picture frames that perfectly complements and enriches your artwork. For me, picture framing is about celebrating your important life moments, achievements and memories, helping you express your personality or make a statement at home or work.
